Eleanor Clarke (nee Coomber)

Jun 28 1925 - Apr 17 2017

Peacefully walked through heaven’s gates on Monday, April 17, 2017 at the age of 91. A longtime resident of Garson, ON, Eleanor was born in Windsor, ON in 1925, and lived in Brantford, ON for her last 12 years. Daughter of the late Alan Coomber and Leona (nee Beaudoin). Cherished mother of Dawn (Bernie Martin), Catherine, Carolyn, Kenneth, Keith (Iris), Donald (Lynda). Beloved grandmother of twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Dear “big” sister of Lee (Han Bruggink), Leslie Nadon, David Coomber (Louise), and Richard Coomber (Gail). Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Walter (Joe) Clarke, her beloved sisters Betty Murray, Agnes Leclair, and Roseann Black, and brothers Alan, and Lloyd.

After raising her six children, Eleanor returned to school and graduated from the Cambrian College Library Technician program. She spent more than 25 years working in libraries in Sudbury ON, Kapuskasing ON, and Morden MB. She earned her BA(Native Studies and Environmental Science) from Laurentian University in 1988, at the age of 63. Eleanor firmly believed in volunteering her time and talents whenever she was presented with the opportunity. She was a life-long member of the United Church, and joyfully sang in the choir at St. Paul’s United Church (Garson) from 1955 to 2005, and at Fairview United Church (Brantford) from 2005 to 2007. She served as Girl Guide Commissioner in the late 1960s, after having been a girl member, and a Guide leader. In the 1990s, she served as a Beaver Leader with Scouts Canada. In her retirement years, she helped to set up a library for the Pastoral Institute of Northern Ontario, and volunteered at Robert Jack Public School (Garson) where she helped many children learn to read. Her most cherished accomplishment was the literacy programs she pioneered in Northern Ontario, earning her the nickname of “the Literacy Lady”.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Bible Society; the Alzheimer Society of Brant; or the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to provide early literacy to children through KidsCanFly.ca
